The people of India have voted decisively to give Narendra Modi the job he coveted. He has a free hand to unite Indians in joint endeavour for national greatness and forge a social compact based on citizenship and not on identity. This book is a non-judgmental look at Modi from the viewpoint of the liberal Indian. It examines his economic stewardship of Gujarat and philosophy of governance. Modi has an opportunity to create economic conditions for people to pursue dignified livelihoods rather than depend on the state for jobs and doles. Hopefully Modi will take everybody along and also reshape the BJP as a liberal, right-of-centre party.

Foreword by Raghav Bahl, Founder & Editor, Network 18

Reviews

"The Narendra Modi phenomenon is one of the more fascinating aspects of contemporary Indian politics. By focussing on the political economy of Gujarat and the leadership style of Modi, Vivian unravels the key elements in the rise of the BJP's prime ministerial aspirant. This book is timely and relevant..."  Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, CNN-IBN

"Is there a Modi model of development or is it just a way of executing the Gujarat model? Will the minorities feel comfortable with him? Can he tolerate dissent? The questions pile up, but for now, do they matter? As Vivian says the cult of development has made him an acceptable leader."  — Sunil Jain, Mg. Editor, The Financial Express

"Vivian’s empirical objectivity into the study of the Gujarat Model of governance makes this book a refreshing change from the extreme positions on either side that most writings on Mr Modi take."  — Senthil Chengalvarayan, Editor-in-Chief, Network18 Business News

"India's biggest opportunity is better governance, in governments as also in private entities. Vivian provides a diligent and vital perspective on how effective leadership can provide outcome-focused governance, the only way India would ensure a better life for its citizens."  — Shailesh Pathak, President - Corporate Strategy, Srei Infrastructure Finance
