Based on latest research, here for the first time in many decades is a modern, user-friendly and comprehensive historical atlas of South Asia. It spans a period of 4,000 years — from the Harappan culture in the Indus Valley (c. 2000 b.c.e.) to contemporary South Asia. The countries covered are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Atlas and Survey of South Asian History contains 96 newly-drawn maps. Each map is accompanied by informative text based on current scholarship. Karl Schmidt’s commentary is so thorough that the book can well stand alone as an introductory survey of the Indian subcontinent.

The topics covered include:

  • Political and military history from ancient to modern times

  • Geography, climate and languages

  • Economic developments including trade and industry

  • Social and cultural history — religions, education, population, urbanization, etc.

  • Additional help is provided by a glossary, a bibliography and an index.

All those interested in Indian or South Asian history will find this book both indispensable and illuminating. Absorbing, clear and easy-to-read, it is both an exceptional reference work and an "illustrated" text which can be read from beginning to end.

Reviews

“There is little doubt that a new historical atlas of South Asia was necessary ... Karl Schmidt has filled this need.”  —Marc Gilbert, North Georgia College, USA

“In the right hands, maps, like pictures, are worth thousands of words ... Karl J. Schmidt’s artfully drawn maps and lucid commentaries tell a history of South Asia that reads like moving pictures. (This book) fills an important gap ... includes recent scholarship and a rich array of non-political maps on South Asian economic, social and cultural history.”  —Kevin Reilly
